Benelli belongs to the group of the oldest Italian manufacturers of motorcycles. The company was established in 1911, in Pesaro, Italy, by the widow Teresa Benelli who, after her husband’s death, invested all of her capital into the business so that it would offer stable work and income for her six sons. Before Benelli started producing motorcycles, it was just the Benelli Garage repairing bicycles and motorcycles. However, it was already able to make all needed spare parts in-house. Initially, there were six employees in addition to Teresa’s sons. In 1920, Benelli created its first complete engine – a single-cylinder two-stroke 75 cc, which was adapted to a bicycle frame. One year later, Benelli built its first motorcycle.
Later on, with the onset of World War II, Benelli debuted its 4-cylinder supercharged 250 cc racing bike for competitions in the 1940 season. With the start of the war, the Benelli Four was limited to competition in Italian domestic races. Unfortunately, due to wartime destruction, Benelli remained out of production until the late forties. All unsold motorcycles intended for use by the army, were adapted to civil use in order to generate income and restart operations. In the late sixties, Benelli introduced the Tornado 650 for sale in the United States and Great Britain. Despite its rather hefty weight, the Benelli Tornado vertical twin earned a reputation for high performance and reliability. At the time of launch, the Tornado (which later became the Tornado S) produced 57 HP at 7,400 rpm, offering a top speed of 117 mph. It was discontinued in the mid-seventies, right when Benelli introduced a series of “multis” that were designed to compete with Japanese triples and fours. Yes, Benelli always had very beautiful and extravagant bikes. However, Benelli products had never been available to everyone as they always required high production costs.
