For over 40 years, Cagiva has been known for manufacturing upscale on-road and racing bikes, off-road motorcycles, and other two-wheeled vehicles that deliver an excellent combination of performance, style, and price. The company boasts an impressive history that started back in 1950 in Varese. Its name is a portmanteau that came from the founder's name, Giovanni Castiglioni, and the location of establishment, Varese. Originally, Cagiva didn’t make motorcycles, being focused on the production of metal components. Everything changed in 1978, when Giovanni's sons, Gianfranco and Claudio, joined the company and the Cagiva racing team was formed. The same year, the company acquired the Schiranna factory from the Italian division of Harley-Davidson and began the production of bikes. Business grew up quickly – by the end of 1979, Cagiva had an annual production of 40,000 motorcycles and more than 150 employees. The lineup included eight models using 2-stroke engines with the displacement varying from 125 cc to 350 cc.
In the 1980s, Cagiva started the production of dirt bikes and achieved their first podium result in motorsports. The company signed an agreement with Ducati for obtaining 4-stroke engines with large swept volume (350 cc – 1000 cc). Business still grew and Cagiva even bought out some of their competitors suffering from financial troubles like Husqvarna, Ducati, and Moto Morini. In the early 1990s, the company invited Eddie Lawson and he brought the Hungarian Gran Prix title next year after joining the team. In 1994, Cagiva took the third position in the World Championship. Later, they also took victories in Paris-Dakar off-road events, GP 500 World Championship, and a range of motocross races. In 1999, the brand unveiled the Navigator, Raptor and V-Raptor that turned out to become legendary motorcycles.
In the 2000s, Cagiva experienced some difficulties, having undergone two ownership changes. In 2012, the company stopped the production of bikes in order to focus their efforts on their parental brand, MV Agusta. Though, in a few years, production was renewed and now Cagiva offers a range of lightweight, agile, and noise-free electric enduro / dirt motorcycles.
