The idea of creating a versatile motorcycle for both natural terrain and paved roads is far from being new, and there are lots of more or less successful models designed by all the existing Japanese motorcycle makers, along with KTM, BMW, and some other reputable companies. Actually, versatile dual sport bikes get more and more popular. However, combining some features of a street and dirt bike, they are all about balance in many regards. In particular, it's a balance in performance, which implies optimized engine operation in various modes. For instance, if you own quite a heavy two-wheeler meant for long travels, you might want to improve its fuel economy and low-end torque.
Owners of more lightweight dual-sport bikes, many of which feature modest engine displacement and were initially developed for off-road use only, might think about various upgrades aimed at increasing horsepower, improving throttle response, and addressing emissions issues if any. Meanwhile, many of these tasks require engine tuning, and that's when performance chips and programmers come into play. Available in numerous models and modifications, they offer different ways of tuning, and most of them are plug-and-play devices working together with the stock or aftermarket fuel controller.
Some of them allow you to increase or reduce fuel supply in different engine operation modes such as normal riding conditions, acceleration, or full throttle; you can do it without a PC or dyno stand. Others rely on one or two wideband oxygen sensors and enable you to set the most effective air-to-fuel ratio in virtually any mode, and these target ratios will be maintained automatically and displayed on a special gauge. Some modules already contain alternative fuel maps composed by experienced racers, which can also be adjusted manually with the help of a PC or even a smartphone; besides, you can switch between the base and altered maps when needed.
