An aFe Pro 5R air filter should remain effective for 25,000 to 30,000 miles. However, you should regularly check your air filter when performing vehicle service like oil changes, more often if you frequently drive in extremely dusty conditions. When it gets to the point where you can't see the aluminum mesh on the filter anymore, it's time to clean your air filter.
When cleaning is necessary, use only the aFe Restore Kit. The aFe cleaning solution is uniquely formulated to clean without damaging the filter media. Never use gasoline, detergents or parts solvent. The aFe oil forms an additional line of defense against dirt without limiting airflow. Never use transmission fluid, motor oil, diesel fuel or any other type of oil.
Before cleaning your air filter, you must first make sure you have the correct cleaning kit. The Pro 5R air filter uses the cleaner and blue filter oil. The Pro GUARD 7 uses the cleaner and gold filter oil. And because it doesn't require oiling, the Pro DRY S only requires cleaner.
When cleaning is required, remove the air filter and use a soft bristle brush, like a paint brush, to remove large pieces of dirt and debris from between the pleats. Gently tap the filter on the ground to dislodge any loose dirt, being careful not to bend any of the pleats. Spray the cleaning solution on the dirty side of the filter and allow it to soak in for about 10 minutes.
Using low pressure water from the tap or a hose, rinse the filter from the inside out. Do not use high pressure water. Repeat spraying cleaner and rinsing until the water runs clear. Since the filter media will be stained, it will not be completely white and may still appear dirty. Let the filter air dry. Do not use compressed air. It may take 12-24 hours depending on humidity and temperature.
When the filter is completely dry, apply a small amount of oil on the top of each pleat, leaving about an inch of filter media un-colored. Do not over oil by applying oil down in between the pleats or applying it all the way to the urethane. Let the filter sit for 8-12 hours to allow the oil to fully wick throughout the filter. If light spots appear, touch up those areas.
