Most modern motorcycles are equipped with a chain drive system to transfer power from the engine to the rear wheel. That configuration consists of two sprockets connected by a chain. One is installed on the gearbox, while another is located on the rear wheel. Thanks to its simple and easy-to-reach design, this system is easy to maintain. However, it should be done on a regular basis. Depending on the chain installed, the driveline requires different levels of maintenance. Thus, O-ring and X-ring chains are self-lubricating and require less service compared to standard non-sealed ones which should be cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted regularly.

Another benefit of this driveline configuration is that it allows for easier adjustment of the final drive ratio. It can be done by just replacing a chain and sprockets. As an example, if you want to make your bike accelerate faster, you should install either a smaller front sprocket or a bigger rear one, and vice versa if you want a higher top speed. As a rule, it is required to change your rear sprocket by three-four teeth for every tooth change on your front one. Whatever the setup, you shouldn’t adjust your gearing by more than 1 tooth at a time.

Gearing changes are not the only reason to replace those driveline components. Just like any other parts, they are prone to wear and damage. So if the visual inspection reveals uneven sprocket tooth wear, loose bolts, or rusted chain links, don’t wait too long to install new units. If your chain is worn, it is recommended to be replaced along with sprockets, and vice versa.
