With the appearance of electronic fuel injection and ignition systems, the tuning process became more flexible, and engine operation became smoother and more effective. Meanwhile, a greater number of variables have to be taken into account when designing and adjusting the motor. Electronics should be properly calibrated for a good result, and engineers have to choose from numerous variants of settings suitable for one or another application or engine configuration. However, some riders would like to alter the factory settings on their own.
The problem is, most stock engine control modules don’t provide such a possibility. However, it’s offered by aftermarket performance chips and programmers, and if you or your mechanic have certain knowledge in this area, the performance of your motorcycle can be boosted with no serious side effects. So, what kind of adjustment is more preferable for your cruiser bike? There are several ways to define it, depending on the kind of a fuel management system. Some of these methods are based on the optimal air-fuel ratio determined with the help of the wideband O2 sensor.
Arguably, it’s the most suitable way for a cruiser, as it offers the finest fuel efficiency during long trips and good acceleration without enriching the mixture excessively. This sensor is included in many aftermarket kits that can work instead of the factory ECU or in parallel with it. Other methods are somewhat simpler – you can just add or reduce fuel supply in certain modes and RPM zones. Also, there are automatic systems correcting fuel supply on the fly for the quickest acceleration, in accordance with the throttle position and RPM change. Many products can enhance the operation of a stock bike, while others are absolutely necessary to tune up a motorcycle with a modified motor, aftermarket exhaust, or performance air intake system.
