A cylinder is the part of a motorcycle where the magic of transformation of an air-fuel mixture into the energy of movement takes place. When your motorcycle engine is running, your cylinders experience an extreme amount of stress. They are subjected to the constant explosion of an air-fuel mixture and high friction caused by up and down movements of pistons. All this slowly ruins the inner surface of the cylinder and wears it out until the gap between the piston and cylinder walls becomes too large, so the piston rings can't work properly and begin leaking. Whereas today more and more motorcycles have a liquid-cooled engine, many of them, including cruisers and scooters, still rely on the oncoming airflow. These fins help the cylinder cool down faster by increasing the contact area between the cylinder surface and air.
