The timing mechanism is what ensures the synchronization between the camshaft(s) and crankshaft of your dual-sport bike’s engine. Most commonly, this is achieved by the gears sitting at the ends of the corresponding shafts and the chain connecting them. Belonging to the inner section of the engine, all these gears are well-lubricated, cooled, and protected from dust, which ensures very slow abrasive wear. However, severe tensional forces acting on the chain while the engine is starting or accelerating take their toll. Long story short: a timing chain stretches over time.
When it gets longer, the strokes are no more synchronized properly. This affects overall engine performance but is not dangerous. What does pose a threat is a chain getting too loose. If you don’t pay attention to the grinding noise when the engine is cold or is accelerating (the signs of a stretched timing chain), it can suddenly jump over some teeth. The result can be the collapse between the valves and pistons leading to expensive repairs. Prevent that. Get our high-quality replacement timing chains and install them timely.
