First of all, check your key and kill switch. Your scooter may have some safety cut-outs preventing you from starting the engine, for example, if the kickstand is down. Then, make sure that your battery is fully charged. Use a multimeter to measure your battery voltage without turning on the lights and ignition. If it measures less than 11 Volts after charging, you may have to replace your battery. To eliminate the possibility of a severe engine problem, check battery cables for excessive heat. Inspect the main fuse designed to melt in case of a short circuit shutting down the whole electrical system to protect it from severe damage. Also, its filament may fail due to aging or vibration.

Check all connectors on main circuits. A faulty ground wire connection results in a completely dead or inconsistently working component of the electrical system. The location of all ground connections of your scooter can be found in the owner’s manual. If your battery drains quickly, the problem may lay in the alternator. Unplug the connector on the wires that run to the engine and test the resistance and voltage on the stator. The resistance between all tabs must be under 1 Ohm. If the reading exceeds 1.5 Ohms, you need to replace the stator. When your scooter is running, make sure that the voltage reading between all tabs shows similar numbers.

Make sure that your voltage regulator works properly. This component converts the alternator’s AC power into DC power for charging the battery and powering other electrical equipment when the engine is running. It converts excess power into heat to preserve the battery. To make sure that it works fine, connect the multimeter to the battery terminals with the engine running. The reading must be between 13.5 and 14.5 Volts. If your scooter starts and runs fine for some time and then dies, it may be the sign of a bad wire in the ignition coil that loses connectivity when it warms up. The installation of a new ignition coil is the only solution to this problem.
