Equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a relatively small motor, most modern scooters have a relatively short distance between the engine and drive wheel. Taking this into account, engineers decided to locate the gearset, which also belongs to the transmission, near the rear wheel. Aside from the gears, it includes the primary and secondary shafts supported by ball bearings. In a nutshell, the assembly lets the crankshaft spin several times faster than the rear wheel, which is necessary to develop sufficient power. Unlike the rest of CVT components including the pulleys and belt, the gearset needs special oil, and this oil has to be changed once in a while.
Gear oil change is an easy maintenance procedure, but there are some disputes about the oil grade. While most scooter manufacturers recommend using SAE 80 or 85 gear oil, some servicemen and riders use 10w40 or 10w30 motor oil. However, it’s best that you use the grade approved by the scooter manufacturer to avoid possible problems in the long run. Gear oils are thicker, feature different additives, and are specifically developed for the loads experienced by meshing gears. In our online store, you will find high-quality transmission oil for your scooter.
