If you like to twist the throttle wide open, brake at the last moment and smell hot asphalt, a sport bike is definitely your one love. Today, speed addicts can indulge themselves with plenty of gorgeous motorcycles, designed to deliver unrivaled thrills on the track or well-paved roads. These two-wheelers have a modern, aerodynamic bodywork and a fast-revving engine. In a two-stroke motor, a reed valve plays an essential role. It opens to allow the air-fuel mixture to enter the crankcase for combustion and closes to prevent the pressure from pushing it back to the intake. Its design and particular shape optimize engine operation, contributing to increased output and improved performance.
A typical reed valve consists of a wedge-shaped unit carrying reed petals. They open during the period of low pressure within the crankcase. When the motion of the piston compresses the mixture to perform combustion, the valve closes and the reed petals are forced against the block. Reed valves are wear items, partly because their petals are made out of softer materials to prevent serious engine damage if they get broken.
