Except for rotary motors, most internal combustion engines have pistons. Their work is to suck air and, in most cases, fuel while moving to the bottom of the cylinder, compress the mixture while moving to the top, transform the explosion into mechanical energy, and finally push the fumes out while completing the final stroke. That’s how things happen inside your cruiser’s engine. Connecting rods attach pistons to the crankshaft to convert their linear motion into torque that is needed to rotate the wheels. For the sealing purposes, each piston carries rings – usually two or three of them.
Preventing gases from entering the crankcase and removing excess oil from the cylinder walls, piston rings suffer from mechanical wear and contamination. As the pistons are engineered so the rings always come as removable parts, you can replace them in a relatively simple and inexpensive manner when the time comes. And because nothing but high-quality alloys can survive what happens inside your bike’s mighty beating heart, cheaply made parts make no sense.
